Bhopal A Prayer for Rain: Movie Review

I was invited by Indiblogger and the makers of Bhopal: A Prayer for Rain to attend the preview of the movie on Tuesday. I must admit that I had high expectations from the docu-drama, as it describes itself. It had a stellar cast and a compelling issue, basically two of the most important ingredients for the success of any movie. But did it live up to the hype? Well, the answer is yes and no.

The movie begins with Dilip (played by Rajpal Yadav) trying to pull his auto with great difficulty to take his overweight passenger home. As expected, the rickshaw cannot bear his weight and it collapses. While he helps the man get on to his weight, a bunch of children decide to steal his broken wheel, leaving him with no other asset to fall back on. His life takes a turn for better, when he is employed by Union Carbide as an odd jobs man. When one of the workers in the factory dies, Dilip is picked up as his replacement and is given a uniform that he wears with great pride.
Motwani, a local journalist, who is on the lookout for the next sensational stories, runs into the doctor who had treated the factory worker to know his cause of death. The doctor’s answer convinces him that that there is something very wrong with the factory.
The movie then shifts focus to Warren Anderson who is interested in sales figures and not safety protocols, both of which that Union Carbide factory in Bhopal lacks. He comes over to India and is interviewed by student reporter (Mischa Barton) on Motwani’s insistence.
Up to this point the movie has been beautifully made and the plot keeps you engaged. I did not see the point of Mischa’s character as it does not add much to the story line and I found the part unnecessary. Anderson decides to bribe a local politician to merge three tanks full of poisonous chemicals to increase production, even though the company already has a huge surplus of pesticides and other chemicals because of lack of demand by the farmers who are still awaiting the monsoon.
Everything falls apart after this decision and the film shows what exactly went wrong on that fateful night. However, here is when the movie loses its steam. The scenes that could be intense and could move a person to tears are lackluster. I could not connect with the emotions that were playing in front of me as they seemed to be overtly dramatized. The story, which initially had started with Dilip’s struggle suddenly shifts focus to the Bhopal Gas tragedy and the transition is not all that smooth.
The movie has its heart in the right place; it tries to show both the perspectives of the tragedy, but it fails to evoke the emotions that tragedy of this magnitude generally would. I particularly enjoyed Rajpal Yadav’s performance as well as that of Martin Sheen. You should watch this movie for their performances alone.
Rating: 3 out of 5

Website Review: Engrave.in

As I write this post, I can’t help but remember a very popular nursery rhyme
Yes, you got it right, it is Humpty Dumpty J Anyway, let’s not digress from my review of Engrave.in. First let’s get to know this website a little better.

About Engrave
Engrave is an India-based design collective engaged in the pursuit of creating unique lifestyle products with fine craftsmanship.
At Engrave, we love bringing beautiful images to life; we also believe that personalised gifts are the ones that are cherished the most. Therefore we are committed to offering you an ever expanding range of, simple to create canvas prints and laser engraved products. We combine the finest materials with a master craftsman’s eye for detail to produce top quality products & gifts, perfect for any occasion
Engrave was kind enough to send two wonderful products to me and today I will be sharing my experience with you.
When I first browsed through the website, I was really excited to see such interesting products. Engrave has a great variety of options, when it comes to personalizing things. They even have an option for engraving an iPad. That is pretty impressive, eh?

I finally managed to get over my indecisiveness and ordered Humpty Dumpty planters and a autorickshaw photo frame. Both the products were hand delivered to me a couple of days back.

The autorickshaw frame was really beautiful. You need to email their team the photograph you want to be printed and also a message not exceeding twenty characters. I chose this cute little chubby girl who reminds me of, well, me!
I got the words ‘Kitabi Keeda’ which means a book worm engraved on it. This used to be my nickname back in school J

The frame has two hooks you can easily hang it wherever you want.Though the frame is really gorgeous I really wished that I could change the photograph as often as I want. Right now, the photograph you send is permanently fixed on the frame. You can check out the tiny little screws fixed there.

As for the planters; it was love at first sight for me. I immediately decided to grow money plant inside one of them and put some artificial leaves in the other one till I manage to get a nice indoor plant.

Overall, I am quite impressed with Engrave and it is definitely going to be my go to website when I want to buy amazing presents. The best part is that they ship internationally, too. So, I can send great personalized presents to my relatives abroad.
So, did you like my cute little presents? Have you shopped from Engrave before?

Book Review: God is a Gamer

Blogadda has this amazing Book Reviews program and I was one of the lucky bloggers who got a signed copy of God is a Gamer by Ravi Subramanium! I started reading the book a couple of weeks back and I was enthralled by the intricate plot Ravi has crafted around Bitcoins, which is touted to be the currency of the future. Now, before I end up babbling and revealing the entire plot to you, I think you need to know a little about the book. Check out the synopsis!

About God is a Gamer

Aditya runs a gaming company that is struggling to break even. A banker slips off a high rise building, plunging to her death. The finance minister has made some promises that he is finding hard to keep. The LTTE has unleashed terror in America that sends the FBI on a wild goose chase, bringing them to Mumbai. Enter Varun, part time drug dealer and fulltime genius. He turns around the gaming company before disaster strikes. Meanwhile, the investigators plunge headlong into the shady world of Bitcoins and the Dark Net, websites that only exist for illegal transactions–drugs, sex and money. God is a Gamer culminates in a stunning climax where money means nothing, assassination is taught by the ancient Greeks, and nothing is as it seems.
My review

I loved thrilling fast paced plots that are a literary roller coaster ride and that makes God is a Gamer a perfect book for me. Now, I must confess that one I first read its description that talked about Bitcoins, I was really confused. I thought it would be a book full of financial jargon which would go over my head. To my surprise, the book explained all the concepts beautifully without interfering with the plot and making the story boring.

The book began with a discussion between Vijay Banga, President of Mastercard International and Joseph Saunders, the CEO of Visa International who were making an attempt to stop a new form credit card to come into the market to ensure that their profits are not affected. From here, the plot jumped to India, then back to the USA till a series of isolated incidents seemed to be bound by a single thread.
Now, I don’t want to talk a lot of the plot because I don’t intend to accidentally give out the spoilers but let me tell you this; the book won’t let you take a rest in between. It is such a compelling read, full of nasty shocks and surprises, that you will find it difficult to understand the grand scheme, pulled off by two people (another shocking revelation), till the very end. The book is undoubtedly well researched and each character is compelling in his own right

So should you get a copy to read for yourself? Hell, yes!

Winning with my Dell Tablet

If you know me personally, you will realize two things instantly; one that I have a very strong competitive streak in me and second that I love to write. Now, I don’t have a snarky, I-am-going-to-puncture-your-tyres-to-win-the-race kind of nature. It is more like Yay-I-love-to-win. So don’t be too scared of me just yet.

Han toh coming back to what I was saying, I love writing and I am very competitive and I think it makes me the perfect participant for a blogging contests. When I was back home, I could sit, create and write posts for hours together, click as many photographs I wanted and basically do anything and everything that came into my mind.

But then I moved from home to a place where I did not have my own PC. I was completely dependent on a computer centre nearby and I was not really comfortable editing photos, or writing with complete strangers who may or may not be staring at my screen. I started ignoring my blog completely for months. My readership reduced drastically and my blog started looking very sad

But then, Dell happened.

It swooped into my life like a beautiful rainbow and made my blog vibrant, colorful and happy again. Instead of being dependent on a computer centre, I could now blog easily on my Dell tab using the numerous aps I had downloaded. I could click photos, edit them and instantly upload them on my blog.

I started participating in many blogging contests, too. My readers started returning to my blog and I could visit my friend’s blogs, too. My Dell tablet infused new life into my almost extinct blog J

Have you read my latest post Homecoming? Well, all the photographs and the content was written on my Dell Tab. And it was appreciated by my readers, too.

Also, like I mentioned in one of my previous posts, I have started using many more social networking websites than what I used to in the past. I have also become more active and a big chunk of my readers come from these sites.

Book Review: The Deliberate Sinner

Synopsis:
Is there an acid test to gauge the success of a relationship?
Is it right to carry on in an unhealthy relationship with no conjugal bliss, or look for an alternate path?
Rihana is an adventurous and free-spirited girl, until she marries Veer, an eligible bachelor who comes from a wealthy family. While they appear ‘happily married’, their strong personalities are at odds. Veer, for the most part, is insensitive to Rihana’s physical and emotional needs, straining the relationship and leaving her feeling incomplete.

Caught between the devil and the deep sea, Rihana has to now decide whether to walk out of her marriage and be a victim of society’s ridicule, or compromise on her physical needs, which for her are the foundation for a healthy marital bond.
Can they work out their differences? Will Veer give her what she desires, or push her to do something desperate and scandalous?
My review:
I know that one should never judge a book by its cover, but the minute I got my hands on the ‘The Deliberate Sinner’, I was intrigued. Was it its enticing name that nudged to finish the book overnight or maybe the gorgeous cover? I cannot say. All I know, that at the first glance, it seemed to be a promising read.
‘The Deliberate Sinner’ is the story of Rihanna, a free spirited girl who marries Veer. What is so unusual about it? For one, Rihanna is not like traditional Indian girls; she has a mind of her own. She tries to elope with Raj, someone she has fallen in love with right after her engagement, but he spurns her. She goes ahead and marries Veer, hoping to fall in love with him eventually. Upto this point, the book sounds like a cliché doesn’t it? The story of nearly every soap opera on Television? But what comes next will definitely surprise you.
Rihanna, instead of acting like a ‘good Indian wife’, chooses not to suppress her desires and wants. In fact she is quite vocal about it.  But somewhere down the line, she is forced to keep quiet for the sake of her family. This does not go on for long, though. What does she do to get out of a loveless marriage? Does she get back to her old flame? You will have to read the book to find out.
One thing that I really dislike is when Indian authors try to give a very western name to their characters; it seems so fake! Imagine a girl from a conservative family born somewhere in the 90’s being named Rihanna. Highly unlikely, I believe. I loved Rihanna’s in laws; not your regular scheming variety. Overall, the plot is a little predictable, especially towards the end but it is an interesting, lazy afternoon read. Rihanna’s character gas been well thought out but one can anticipate her next move. There were a few errors here and there, but since it is Bhaavna’s first book, we can forgive her.
So are you planning to pick up this book soon? Would love to discuss it with you. J
