Harnessing the power of a half billion Indians

‘Gharghar’ was a quintessential game that all of us must have played at some point in our childhoods. It involved a designated husband, a wife, a couple of kids and people who were a part of their world. The premise of the game was simple; kids would imitate their parent’s daily behaviours. The ‘husband’ for example would be given breakfast early, would be very impatient and would leave for work. The wife would go shopping after she completed her household chores.

When I look back, there was this one incident that had a profound impact on my life at a very young age.

My friends and I were in the midst of playing the game when I said “I don’t feel like cooking today, why don’t you (husband) cook?”

My friend Riddhi, playing the part of a husband, replied, “That’s a girl’s job. I can’t do it. I have to take care of the business”.

The role of the husband was played by a 7-year old girl yet she knew that men couldn’t be expected to cook. They had to earn money and run a business. Our understanding of businesses was vague back then. It was a mysterious way through which people earned money but one thing was clear, it was a man’s domain and women couldn’t enter it.

No parent wants to limit their child’s aspirations. However, one cannot deny that there are subtle differences, that you realize in hindsight, in the career paths considered to be “acceptable” for men and women. Children are very perceptive; these small things play an important role in their psyche.

Subconsciously, we start believing that men and women have pre-defined roles in the society and one cannot break away from that mould. The culture and the environment we grow up in often affects the choices we make later on in our lives.

Girls are taught, “The sky is your limit and you can do whatever you want as long as are not neglecting your family and your duties at home”. Our freedom is burdened with so many terms and conditions that our dreams just don’t take flight

The recent Mastercard Index of Women Entrepreneurs (MIWE) ranks India 52 out of 57 countries. The ranking remains unchanged from the previous year. Interestingly, cultural bias is the major reason attributed to the fact that Indian women are less inclined towards business ownership. The second factor is the lack of finance.

Did you know that India is the world’s third-largest start-up ecosystem? Only 14% of these start-ups are run by women entrepreneurs and most of them are self-financed.

2018 was the year when many women began talking, debating and raising their voices for issues most important to them. We stood together to #PressForProgress, we shared our #MeToo stories to spread awareness on how rampant sexual abuse is and said #TimesUp to the perpetrators of sexual assault, harassment, and inequality.

This is just the beginning. What has begun as dialogue has to translate to something tangible? Empowering women economically is the first baby step towards women empowerment as a whole.

There is increasing evidence that shows entrepreneurship as being a vital contributor to the advancement of a country’s economy. Today, it is a commonly accepted fact that both women’s development and national development run hand in hand. In order to achieve inclusive development, it is essential to actively involve women in the economic system.

Entrepreneurship is an integral part of socio-economic transformation. A woman as an entrepreneur is economically more powerful than as a laborer because ownership not only confers control over assets but also gives her the freedom to make decisions. It is widely accepted that if women’s empowerment has to be purposeful and relevant, women have to be full-fledged participants in economic activities.

Thus, by investing in entrepreneurship opportunities we can reduce gender equality, eradicate poverty and work towards an inclusive India.

Let’s begin harnessing the power of the half billion that has always remained in the shadows. Let’s have more women in power and in leadership roles. Let’s teach our girls that they, too, can become future entrepreneurs; all they need is a good idea and hard work. Let’s all work towards an inclusive society where women and men contribute equitably.

A platform like The Economic Times hosts ET Women’s Forum and this year marks the second edition. It is a definitive and diverse gathering of influential women of impact from India and abroad. I strongly feel that there should be more platforms like these which not only highlight issues but also help in finding out the possible solutions. Explore the rich culture of the forum on its website www.etwomensforum.com. They also have a nomination drive running on Facebook and Twitter where you can nominate the inspirational women in your life and turn their stories into legend. To view the ET Woman’s Forum from the lens of the new age woman you can follow their Instagram handle. Champion the cause of empowerment by taking part in the forum debates on their social media platforms.

I am definitely joining in the interesting conversations; hope to see you there as well.

A Series of Unfortunate Events Season 2: First look

Series of Unfortunate Events Season 2
A Series of Unfortunate Events Season 2: First look

Lemony Snicket loves teasing us and true to his style he had left behind a cryptic message  for A Series of Unfortunate Events Season 2 in a video which lead me to www.vastlyfrighteningdecision.com (it now redirects to Netflix). Snicket left this message, “To my horror, Netflix has funnelled their ill-gotten gains towards the second season of this unhappy and unnerving series.“Even as we speak, set builders, costume designers and trauma specialists are snapping into action, the better to bring you even more upsetting episodes, all because of your reputed enthusiasm for this grim example of so-called family programming.” I think I am in love with him.

My crush aside, did you know that A Series of Unfortunate Events season two will officially premiere worldwide on March 30, 2018, but yours truly had the opportunity to binge on it a day in advance. I strongly believe in not revealing spoilers but that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t want to leave behind a clue or two for those of you who are waiting for the series to be officially released. Let’s begin, shall we?

Series of Unfortunate Events Season 2
Secret screening of A Series of Unfortunate Events Season 2

After a series of misadventures beginning with their house burning down, running from the evil designs of their Uncle Olaf, moving unsuccessfully from one guardianship to another and staying at the lumber mill, season one ended with Mr. Poe tracking the Baudelaire siblings and admitting them to the Prufrock Preparatory boarding school.

Season two begins with the orphans finding themselves under the guardianship of Vice Principle Nero even as Olaf begins scheming plots to kill them and acquire their wealth. The Baudelaire’s are destined however to uncover the truth about their family. They find friends in the librarian Madame Lulu (who is she and how will she affect the children’s lives is a major surprise) and in the Quagmires who share a similar misfortunate past. As Olaf returns to visit the place where he went to school, many secrets begin to reveal, true identities unveil, allegiances shift and unlikely relationships are formed.

The series is fast-paced as usual and while I absolutely adore Neil Patrick Harris I would say Patrick Warburton has stolen the show this time around.

Come Season Two, the orphans are in for another gloomy rollercoaster ride of unfortunate events. Is there some hope? Don’t we mortals believe all’s well that ends well? I think you will start second guessing this statement once you reach the end of the series.

Psst….One last thing, yes Snicket’s world is as magical as before, the series is both dark and funny and yes, you will love it.

Don’t forget to watch the series on Netflix on March 30, 2018  :

Feeling lonely? Why not Cuddll?

Imagine being fresh out of college, with a brand new job in a strange new city.

Then imagine that the only space where you can stay in the strange new city is a hostel at such a short notice is in the outskirts. A friendly stray dog and the kirana store owner are the only people you are happy to see you every day. You have no friends, actually you don’t even have any acquaintances and on top of that you are almost broke because your first salary is yet to come in. So it is impossible to go to the club or even out for a nice dinner.

This was me in 2013 and the city was Bangalore. I didn’t know any place in Bangalore besides my hostel address and my office of course, I knew two words of the local language ‘kannada gothila’ (I don’t speak Kannada) and was very lonely. Sure, the dating apps were available but they tend to be a little creepy and the amount of effort it took to sort the good from the bad was not something I had the energy to bother with.

Things improved after the first few months, office colleagues warmed up to me and we hung out every now and then. But what I was dying to do was to explore the city, have somebody tell me what places to visit and just have bunch of people to talk with on interesting topics.

My sister and my bestie faced the same experience when they moved to Pune just last year. They had each other for a while but they were two different people and things wouldn’t end well.

Let’s forget about moving into a new city and not knowing anyone for a bit. I am living in the city that I have been born and brought up in and I like meeting new people with similar interests.

HOWEVER

The club isn’t the best place to find a friend
And the bar I hate to go
Me and me alone at the table doing chocolate milkshake shots
Drinking fast and then we stare into the space

If I had written Shape of you, these would be my lyrics.

I guess we are slowly becoming a lonely generation and despite being hyper connected on social media, what most of us crave is meeting people one on one for genuine conversations.

Think about it; where can you make friends these days? You end up being restricted to office colleagues or the people you have grown up with or have been college to. Where can you find someone to dazzle with your fab personality or someone who can just lend a fresh perspective to your life? Social media is one possible place but I have encountered a fair share of creeps along with some genuinely nice people. Which other option do the lonely men and women like me have?

The answer? It lies in a cuddll. No, really it does! I am not kidding.

Cuddll, a shiny new app that I have just signed up on helps people  discover and meet new and like-minded people. You can sign up for a ‘Cuddll’ (an informal gathering) as well as chat with people to understand them better.

The best things in life are free and so is Cuddll. I have realized that group activities and one on one conversations (depending on what you are in the mood for) helps make strangers become acquaintances and acquaintances become friends. I love the fact that it allows me to let go of the pressure of looking in a certain way or swiping people right and left just on the basis of a photograph. There is so much to friendship and love than just a glance right?

Top 3 reasons why you should get on Cuddll? I have highlighted a few already but here you go!

i) Who doesn’t love a Cuddll?

I love a cuddll and I can cuddll all day. I would also love to Cuddll on the weekends and not stay stuck at home because:

i) Friend 1 cancelled the plans last minute

ii) Friend 2 is not that interested in getting up in the morning for a trek

iii) Colleague 1 suddenly fell ‘sick’

Nope, the best-laid plans are often tossed out of the window for various reasons. I am past the stage now and I think I deserve a reliable Cuddll!

ii) Safety and privacy

A Cuddll can be open, closed or private depending on what you are comfortable with. You can view all the open Cuddll’s and join the one that catches your fancy. You also have the option to create your own Cuddll’s. Everybody who has signed up on the app has to verify their phone number and their email id within 48 hours post which their account will be deleted. I must say this feature makes me happy because no matter what app you are on, safety is always a top priority

iii) User-friendly

The app has several features and I am sure you will enjoy discovering all of them on your own but I want to highlight a couple of them.

Their filters: They allow you to choose events according to your interests, the date timing and so on so that you have all the flexibility in the world. They have everything from sports to travelling to volunteering or just plain ol’ chilling. I know that my first Cuddll would be chilling 🙂

Conversations: I love to yap on apps and Cuddll allows you to have conversations with people before you join a meet up.

BTW, I was going through the different filters on Cuddll and I saw something that made my heart leap me with joy. They had a filter for social workers! Social workers! Social workers! I know I said it thrice but I am super excited about the range of options they have and the fact that they included my profession!

Cuddll App India
Let’s Cuddll soon?

So, what do you think about Cuddll? Would you like to Cuddll next weekend? Sign up on the app now 🙂

A detailed guide to Thyroid and Thyroweight

thyroid and thyroweight

From being labelled “too lazy to exercise” and “unhealthy”, I have seen two women who are an important part of my life being constantly stigmatized because of a medical condition that they can’t do much about. Yes, I am talking about the disorder of thyroid and thyroweight-. Two of my aunts have been battling thyroweight -a condition of weight gain and tiredness under thyroid disorder, or the past decade. They exercise, eat healthy, are avid trekkers and yet there are some people who continue to make disparaging remarks about them.

Unfortunately, even in this digital age, all people know about thyroid disorder is that it makes you “fat”. They fail to realize how deep-rooted this problem can be and the various consequences of this health disorder can have if not treated on time.

I have seen my aunts suffer, struggle and eventually make peace with their condition. I have seen them heroically face all odds to live a happy fulfilling life. Which is why; I strongly believe that everybody should be well aware about Thyroid disorder and thyroweight. I have put together some facts that you need to know and some myths that need to be busted.

What is thyroid exactly?

The thyroid is an important gland that is located in the neck region of a human body. A healthy thyroid is important for us to maintain a balanced mood and overall good health. When functioning normally, this butterfly-shaped organ produces adequate amounts of two hormones which help regulate the rate of metabolism in our body.

So I have a thyroid, too?

It is important to know that Thyroid isn’t a problem in itself. It is a cause of worry only when the production of these hormones go awry making the thyroid gland to become under-active or becomes over-active. This leads to two problems in the thyroid, known as Hyperthyroidism – excessive production of thyroid hormone, or Hypothyroidism –  insufficient production of thyroid hormones. Hypothyroidism is the most common thyroid disorder detected among patients.

What are the common symptoms of thyroid disorder?

Some of the symptoms of thyroid disorder include:

  • Thyroweight (weight gain/fatigue/lethargy)
  • Anxiety and hand tremors
  • Muscle cramps
  • Dry skin
  • Constipation
  • Fatigue
  • Irregular menstrual flow
  • Hair loss

Research says that over 8 million women are unaware that they suffer from thyroid disorder. They attribute the above-mentioned symptoms to their age or their lifestyle These symptoms are generally not considered to be important enough to visit a doctor. For more information on the symptoms please visit  http://thyroidindia.com/thyroweight/

Take my aunt for example; she was 38 years old when she first started noticing an unexpected increase in weight followed by constant fatigue. Being a teacher at a school, she attributed these factors to increase in her workload. It was only a year later that she was diagnosed with thyroid disorder after we consulted a specialist who recommended her to undergo some tests.

Studies believe that over 42 million Indians suffer from thyroid disorders. 11 % of the urban population is believed to have a thyroid disorder, with women being 3 times more prone to the disorder than men. Like my aunt, I am sure many women often neglect these early symptoms.

Will a patient have it for life or can thyroid disorder be cured?

Speaking from my aunt’s experience, thyroid disorder cannot be cured. However, the problems associated with it are not permanent illnesses and both are treatable through simple medication and self care. After her diagnosis, my aunt started attending yoga classes daily, made changer to her diet and took her medicines regularly. It has been 5 years since her diagnosis and she is living a normal happy life.

One should always remember, neglecting the disorder can lead to life-threatening ailments including heart problems and decreased brain functioning.

Myths around Thyroid and Thyroweight

There are several myths surrounding the causes, symptoms, treatment and effects of a thyroid disorder. Thus, it is essential for one to be aware of the real from the wrong in order to protect oneself. Among the many myths, the most common ones are:

#1 Thyroid disorder only happens at old age

There is a consistent belief that health problems are only a part of old age and that we can live carefree, neglecting our bodies till retirement. This is evidently a wrong assumption given the increasing cases of mental illness, osteoporosis, heart attacks, fatigue and muscle pain being found at a young age today. In fact, thyroid disorders could be at the heart of many of these aforementioned ailments. People are vulnerable to thyroid problems right from the age of 35. Cases of youngsters in their teens or in their twenties reporting thyroid disorders are also becoming common today.

The thyroid hormone helps in the normal brain development of a baby in the mother’s womb. Thus, people of all ages can be impacted by the problem.

#2 Only Women Get Hypothyroid

While it is true that women are more prone to thyroid disorders due to hormonal changes, especially after pregnancy, it is not wholly true. Thyroid dysfunction is found in men just as much with the resultant problems of depression, loss of energy and weight gain being serious causes of concern. Recent studies report 1 in 10 Indians suffer from thyroid disorders with only 60% of them being women. So men, too, suffer from and are highly prone to thyroid disorders.

#3 Thyroid treatment does not require medication

It is believed that professional medical treatment for thyroid disorders is unnecessary and that self-medication alone can solve the problem. This is far from the truth and can be dangerous. While dietary and lifestyle changes are important to sustain a healthy thyroid, it is only one part of a course in the treatment process. If you have been diagnosed with thyroid disease, ensure that you follow the proper treatment while also incorporating other healthy habits into your life.

#4 Swelling in the neck

While thyroid disorder can lead to a swelling in the neck region, the reverse assumption is not always true. A swelling in the throat need not always be a thyroid disorder and can be a swelling in the lymph node caused due to some other problem.

#5 Thyroweight and obesity

Hypothyroidism leads to lowered metabolic rates and can lead to weight gains. Individuals who are diagnosed often blame the disorder as being the sole cause of obesity while ignoring the lack of regular exercise and a proper diet in their daily lives. Thyroid disorders should not be used as a reason to help an individual justify their neglect towards taking care of their healthy looking bodies. On the contrary, small weight gains must not be ignored as insignificant and treatment must be sought if other symptoms such as lethargy and fatigue are felt at the same time.

Obesity and a swelling in the neck need not always be the reason for thyroid disorder. Nonetheless, they can be probable symptoms to a problem in the thyroid. When noticed along with other symptoms, individuals must seek treatment with a doctor immediately for early diagnosis and treatment.

As I always say, you should always consult your doctor to seek clarifications or recommendations for tests and medicines. Never self-medicate or stop taking your medicines without your doctor’s approval.

How can you help?

It is important that we encourage and support all the men and women who have thyroid disorder and are struggling with thyroweight in whatever way we can. I, for one, try to join my aunt in her yoga classes to constantly motivate her. Another thing that you can do is try to spread awareness on thyroid disorder as widely as possible to ensure cases can be diagnosed and treated early.

That’s all from me. Does anybody in your family suffer from thyroid disorder? How are they coping with it? I would love to know in the comments below.
